Exploring The History Of The Awesomeness Of Video Games – The Beginning

Of all the things that the 1970’s produced, there are few that made as big of a cultural impact as video games. There’s no question about it: video games have been a significant force in society and one of the most popular leisure pursuits.

Chances are if you’re under the age of 40, you played them, some of us a lot. There was Atari, Intellivision and Colecovision. Don’t forget Sega and Nintendo. Today there are web sites that allow you to download free online games.

And if you remember those days of the late ‘70’s and early 80’s, you recall that the games relied on graphic improvements and better ways of shooting the enemy. It was more or less a solitary pursuit.

With the rise of the Internet and online games however, lots of things changed, including the ability to download games and playing online games, making games a more social activity, with lots of players, or opponents playing each other from different countries.

This may be the biggest change – and the latest benefit that games have offered the world.

But what about the early days? How did it all start and what were the video games that defined the era?

Exploring The History Of The Awesomeness Of Video Games

Exploring The History Of The Awesomeness Of Video Games: The Innovators

Many people think that Pong was the home game that started it all, but really it was Magnavox and their “Odyssey” system in 1972.

Although it was very simple, it was still the first. It had twelve simple games with graphic overlays.

However, there was lots of room for improvement, and that’s where Pong came into play.

Nolan Bushnell created Pong, along with Al Alcorn, the founder of Atari. Rumor has it that when the prototype was tested at a California bar, the machine broke down after two days, because it was so popular.

The next logical step was to create a home version. So, one year later, Atari released Pong, complete with built in paddles, and a speaker. Of course, Pong was a huge success and represented a new stage in the evolution of gaming.

Over sixty Pong knock-offs would be produced, but Atari dominated the market.

Next was the implementation of the microprocessor, which the entire industry adopted. As a result of this, more complicated systems could be developed. These systems produced groundbreaking and innovative graphical and auditory effects that had never been seen before.

Consumers were eating it up. The industry was on fire. In 1981 alone, five billion dollars were spent on video arcade machines and another billion dollars was spent on home video game systems.

Atari’s VCS/2600 system remained the dominant player through 1982, when the gaming market experienced a crash.

Exploring The History Of The Awesomeness Of Video Games: Pac Man

What were some of the great games? How about Pac Man? Pac Man, the yellow blob that ate up dots and avoided squid-like ghosts, was a worldwide sensation and probably the biggest game of all time.

Exploring The History Of The Awesomeness Of Video Games: Space Invaders

Space Invaders was another incredibly popular game. In fact, it really marked a turning point for arcade games, bringing them out of bars and into family friendly places like shops and restaurants.

The premise of Space Invaders was to stop an alien invasion. This simple formula went on to become the most successful arcade game of all time.

Exploring The History Of The Awesomeness Of Video Games: Super Mario and Others

Then there was Super Mario, which was huge as well.

It involved an Italian anti-hero who was deliberately designed as a character that everyone could relate to. Soon thereafter came Zelda, Metroid, and other classics.

Exploring The History Of The Awesomeness Of Video Games

Exploring The History Of The Awesomeness Of Video Games: Rise and Fall of Atari

Atari was the hottest thing in the gaming world in the early ‘80’s. Today, they are a relic of past glory. So what happened? Atari made some bad decisions, and although it’s a little complicated, it’s helpful to understand the situation.

At that time in the computing world, magnetic mediums were implemented in the data storage used in Arcade machines.

These mediums allowed for a higher memory capacity than ROM cartridges.

In 1982, Atari had the option to include a disk drive in their systems. The price difference would have been nominal, and the memory capacity would have been significant. Atari, however, thought that magnetic media was too “fragile” for the consumer to adequately handle.

Atari’s “concern” for the customer backfired on them. In the previous years, there had been a very fine line separating arcade game quality from home game quality. With arcades utilizing storage capacities ten to forty-five times larger than home systems that fine line became a chasm.

Arcade games seemed to be evolving exponentially, while home systems seemed “stuck in a time warp.”

The public quickly became uninterested in video game specific consoles, and sales plummeted.
This would mark the end of Atari’s reign of the video game market.

The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story Part 2

My Experience At The Retro Game Night

The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story – Continue From Part 1

Last week we started to get into the motivation of the gamer in the first part of The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story part 1. We discussed challenge and its ugly stepsister competition, two of the most common motivators. If you have not read The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story part 1 then click here to read it before continuing on. Today, we look at two more on the way to forming an overall model for what moves us.

The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story – Creativity Is An Art

Perhaps less common than the first two motivators, creativity is nonetheless an important driving force in the gamer psyche. Though at first gaming doesn’t seem like a particularly creative act, what with its formalized rules and structured systems, there is much more room for self expression than one might think. Some games play to this directly through unique presentations or artistic themes.

The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story – Engaging The Creativity

Music games and many of the Sim titles are basically just expressive outlets that happen to be governed by a computerized system of rules. Other creatives find their outlet in multiplayer gaming. The modern MMORPG sports equipment and decorative combinations numbering well into the millions.

The Creatively Motivated gamer takes pleasure in designing how their character looks as well as changing how they interact with their environment. Creatively Motivated gamers thrive when outlets are available. Anything involving a high degree of expression, decoration, or a large abstract component draws them. They wilt in gaming environments governed purely by numbers, and in those where presentation is extremely homogeneous.

The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story – Escaping Reality

Though we sometimes don’t like to admit it, escapism is a motivation that lives in the heart of every gamer. By design, a game creates an inherently different world. Even games which have as one of their primary goals simulation of some aspect of the real world recast the player into some role they find more exciting than their own.

The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story – Make your Own Reality, Sorta

Escaping into the role of adventurer, pilot, quarterback or even zookeeper provides motivation for nearly every gamer. Escapism Motivated gamers seek out games where the environment is rich, comprehensive, real. They thrive in worlds where suspension of disbelief is high, where they can lose themselves in the depth and complexity available to them.

They gravitate toward role playing and simulation, environments where the world is rich and believable. They tend to avoid abstract games where the underlying reality is difficult to believe or understand. It is a strange sort of paradox that MMORPGS, with their incredibly deep histories and expansive worlds, are not as attractive to Escapism Motivated gamers as pure RPGs.

This effect arises from the multiplayer aspect. Players talking in a public channel about out of game topics or, worse, about the mechanical and numerical aspects of the game world may well ruin the escapists experience and cause them to seek the company of non player characters or others who share their motivation.

The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story – Downside Of Escapism

Much has been made of the downside of escapism. A gamer who spends too much time in a world not their own can begin to lose touch. This sort of disassociation with reality can, and has, lead to all sorts of problems with work, school and personal relations. This does not mean, however, that escapism is itself an unhealthy thing. It is a basic part of the human experience.

The reason we vacation, watch moves, enjoy sporting events or go camping is inherently escapist. As people, we are often unsatisfied with out lot in life. It’s natural to seek out activities that allow us to experience something outside of our day to day. Gaming is no different. However, as gamers, we are an oft misunderstood community.

We owe it to ourselves and to the world at large both to fight with information, by spreading the positive realities of gaming and gamer culture, and to fight internally against obsession. No matter how good a substitute for the real world a game may seem it is, in the end, only a pastime. Leave it once in a while.

Next week, we conclude with Social Interaction. Then, we’ll move on to some sort of unified theory about all this.

Next week we will take a look at some other common gamer motivations and explore the reason why we play video games: the gamer’s story.

The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story Part 1

How To Create Video Games As Your Fun Career Or Business

The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story – What Separate The Gamer and Non-Gamer

There exists some ephemeral quality that separates gamers from the rest of humanity, some thing that makes us, us and them, not us. I’ve never been able to quite put my finger on it, but it is inescapably there.

Today, in hopes of moving closer to that essential quality of gamerosity (not sure if that is a word or not but it sounded cool), we examine part of what makes us tick.

In particular, we take a look at what draws different types of gamers to the hobby, the reason why we play video games: the gamer’s story. Every gamer plays for different reasons, but there are common threads that tie the experience together.

The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story – The Thrill Of A Challenge?

Many gamers are motivated by the challenge a game can present. Success in a game may be governed by any of a wide variety of abilities. A First Person Shooter requires twitch reflexes, a steady hand and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

A word puzzle game may require an extensive vocabulary and the ability to rethink the uses of old words, but no measure of speed. A sports simulation might well require an in-depth knowledge of the topic, in addition to arcade skill, but is unlikely to have terribly much concern for linguistic acumen.

The common thread is that all of the games challenge some subset of a player’s abilities. This challenge can be a powerful motivator. The Challenge Motivated gamer is drawn to a game that tests their skills, preferably one that tests them to their limits.

The gamer may also be motivated by the natural improvement that comes from working at peak. They are driven then, not only to excel, but to improve. Challenge Motivated Gamers thrive whenever a game pushes their skill set of choice, but may be disinterested in games that fall too far away from the target.

The Reason Why We Play Video Games: The Gamer’s Story – Competition The Other Challenge

Competition is a close cousin of challenge. Many gamers are driven by the need to prove they are the best, to be pitted against their fellows and come out on top. Competition minded gamers range from those looking for a challenge in a fair fight to the sort of win-at-all cost leet speaking infants that give us all a bad name. Competition can be easy to take too far. There is nothing inherently wrong with being driven by competition.

To some extent, competition is merely challenge taken to the extreme. It is only when it leads to mistreating your fellow player that it begins to become less a motivation and more an unfortunate personality quirk. Competition Motivated players thrive on those games where they are pitted against one another with the outcome dictated by skill at playing the game.

They will often wane in those environments that either require cooperation, such as many MMORPGs, or in games where skill plays a much smaller role, such as in less sophisticated card or dice games.

Next week we will take a look at some other common gamer motivations and explore the reason why we play video games: the gamer’s story.

The Beginner’s Guide To Gaming With Role Playing Games

My Experience At The Retro Game Night

The Beginner’s Guide To Gaming With Role Playing Games: Understanding The Basics

I wanted to take time to share the beginner’s guide to gaming with role playing games. Role Playing Games are one of my favorite genres because you have the essence of an interactive story book.

Now lets get started with the beginner’s guide to gaming with role playing games.

The Beginner’s Guide To Gaming With Role Playing Games: The Components Of A RPG

For the ones of you that don’t know RPG stands for Role Playing Game, and is one of the most played type of game nowadays.

You are the main hero, and you interact with other characters also called NPC-s ( or Non Playable Characters if you’re playing single player).

They will give you quests to do, and you have to do them, in order to get experience and advance to higher levels.

The story has the main quest, that will end the game when finished, and usually a lot of side quests, that will help you develop your character.

The side quests are not necessary, but will get you deeper into the story and sometimes that is really worth it!

The Beginner's Guide To Gaming With Role Playing Games, Role Playing Games, RPG games, tutorials, learn, experience, strength, life, mana, role playing, beginner's guide, beginner's guide to gaming

The Beginner’s Guide To Gaming With Role Playing Games: Choose Your Character

Most RPG games allow you to choose your type of character at the beginning.

Usually there are several types of characters, all with different attributes, but there are three main categories to choose from: wizard, fighter and archer.

These will take different names and attributes and will be further more differentiated into subcategories, depending on the game.

For example, the wizard can become specialized on different categories of spells, like earth, water, dark magic, white magic, fire, lightning, nature.

The Beginner’s Guide To Gaming With Role Playing Games: How do you grow your character?

Well this depends from game to game, but basically you have :

-life, called life points in many games representing your health

-mana, or mana points representing the wizardry point you have left( these point allow you to do spells, if you don’t have them you won’t be able to cast spells)

-stamina, also found by other names, depending on the game, this represents how much time you can run, of do special moves.

The Beginner’s Guide To Gaming With Role Playing Games: The Growing Process

Besides these three there are a few other primary attributes like:

-strength – representing the strength of your character, you’ll have to put points here if your character is a fighter.

-dexterity –representing the dexterity of your character, usually important for archers

– intelligence – representing the intelligence of your character, usually important for wizards.

There may appear some more primary attributes depending on the game but don’t worry they are usually explained!

Experience – this is heart of the game, and this (along with the story) will keep you in front of the computer for days! Basically, when you kill monsters you get experience, you also get experience when you do the quests.

This experience is used to grow in level, making you stronger and able to battle with more and more monsters.

Take care how you spend your experience, because in the later part of the game it’s important to be strong so you can finish the game.

Usually it’s best to choose a line of evolution at the beginning and keep it until the end of the game !

Ok, we’ve reached the end of part one, hope I was able to enlighten you a little concerning the mysteries of RPG games.

This concludes the beginner’s guide to gaming with role playing games

How To Create Video Games As Your Fun Career Or Business

The Conversation on Xbox Live and Playstation Network (PSN): Xbox Live vs. PSN

I really enjoyed the last episode that we have done. It was great to be able to talk with my fellow gamer

on the effects of Xbox Live and Playstation Network on the gaming experience.

I will have to give a disclaimer that I really do not like Xbox Live so my experiences may be biased quite a bit.

Well correction alot!!!!!!

The reason I do not care for Xbox Live is that they have the nerve to charge for their gold subscription in order to utilize

subscription services like Hulu, Vudu, and Netflix.

Also at one time, I am not sure if they had change it or not but you had to get the gold subscription in order to use facebook

and youtube which are free under normal circumstances.

I thought Xbox Live would suffer due to the competition of Playstation Network and the ability to use Youtube and subscription services

without having to pay a tax to use the network.

The Conversation on Xbox Live and Playstation Network (PSN)

The Conversation on Xbox Live and Playstation Network (PSN): PS4 versus Xbox One

Currently they are feeling the slight effects of it as you can see in the sells of PS4 to Xbox One.

I went into the Walmarts here and noticed that the PS4 are currently sold out however the Xbox One are kind off fully stocked.

I asked one of the employees at the store and asked her if it has been that way for awhile. She stated that usually when the PS4

come in they are usually sold out within hours. However the Xbox One has not been selling that well.

I have tried to give the unbiased information that I have received on the system. Unfortunately, I cannot find an honest benefit

to have Xbox Live and even getting an Xbox One based on the service itself.

Have Video Games Become More Easier Through The Years: The Introduction

We have spoken with a couple of gamers in regards to video games as they have been

produced over the years. I have noticed that the games have become much easier than

the video games that were made in the past. I was not sure if it was because of the new features

like having the ability to save your games or the ability to buy tools that enable you to be able

to change different things in your favor like codes of invincibility. Therefor I have brought up my panel

of gamers and we have made a presentation that have discussed this more in detail. I have enjoyed the

making of this video and I believe this would be fun for you as well.

Have Video Games Become More Easier Through The Years: The RPG World

We cannot talk about game difficulty with explaining the RPG WOrld and see how it has changed in this

area as well. For example, I have spoken with people who are World of Warcraft fans and they have

expressed that the game has became easier over the years to support casual gamers as well. I personally

believe that RPG’s come with it own difficulty setting that can be controlled by the gamer.

For example in Final Fantasy series, if you want to have a real challenge you can go through the game

without leveling and see how you can make it through. If you want to make it easier on you, then you

would pick a spot in the game and do what is called level grinding.

We have addressed both topics in detail on this presentation and have started testing showing video game footage.

As you will see we are in the testing phase of it and we will likely have it perfected in future presentations.

I wanted to start off and say that I am humbled that you all chose us to watch and as the channel progress along we have a lot of things in store for you all so be sure to stay tuned and invite others to watch as well.

This episode brings back memories to us all especially those who remember the 16 bit era. So if you are one that remember be sure to take the memory train with us. Even as we try to school the young guy, lol.

Gamers Channel Episode: 16 Bits and I Love Every Bit Of It – The Inspiration

The inspiration behind this topic came while we were talking and I remembered back when the Nintendo use to get on my nerves because it would go into blinking modes at very inopportune times like when you are about to do a save on Zelda or worse when you beat the last boss. Thank God for Emulators.

Then Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Turbo Grafix 16 and Neo Geo hit the scene and I heard the angels sing, because they did not require a special trick in order for your games to work. Also the game did not blink, mess up or glitch in the middle of game play which was so freaking awesome.

As I was sharing my story, the co-hosts were able to recognize my pain. They had experiences of their own well one did not have that much experience. However that is how we came up with this episode and be sure to check it out.

Classic Video Game Emulators Getting Those Fond Memories

My Experience At The Retro Game Night

How I Got Started With Classic Video Game Emulators

I had did a comedy skit in which I was telling them about the adventures I had with the Nintendo. I was telling about how you had to blow in it, do different routines to get the game to work. Then the most frustrating thing about it was that you can get to the end and be one hit away from being the last boss then it happens. The blink of death. It was that one thing that hindered me from playing the Nintendo. That is until I found out about an emulator.

You might wonder what an emulator is.Classic Video Game Emulators allow your computer to act like a console system such as the Apple IIe or the Atari 2600, which are used to emulate the hardware of a variety of classic arcade games.

Classic Video Game Emulators From your Gaming Ease

Are all classic video games emulated?

No, but those games made before 1992 are. Not all systems are easy to emulate.

Why is there a need for classic video game emulators?

There are three major reasons for classic video game emulators outside the reason I stated in the beginning:

1. Popularity – if the system is popular, even if it is classic, the more effort is pushed to emulate it.

2. Availability of the Information – if the system contains a lot of information, it will be easier to emulate. If a game has never been emulated before, it will require a lot of reverse engineering, which could at times be frustrating.

3. Technical Hurdles – the hardware limits restrictions that are hard to avoid. For example, it took quite some time before the Atari 7800 was emulated, due to the encryption algorithm which prohibited games from being loaded. In addition, newer systems may lack the absolute horsepower to have the game run at a playable, and faster speed.

Although some classic video game emulators can be difficult to run, especially if it is your first time, you must download an emulator and unzip it. If you are not familiar with the procedures, you must read the documentation carefully.

Classic video game emulators are compound pieces of software. Some classic video game emulators may not perfectly emulate the capability of the system it is trying to copy. The imperfections in some emulators may be minor, sometimes timing problems may occur. Some emulators won’t run games at all, or worse have some display problems. Some emulators may be deficient in joystick support, sound, and other significant features.

In writing an emulator, you will undergo a difficult process which requires attaining the precise system information, and figuring out how to emulate it with the software code.

There are two different types of classic video game emulators. The first one is the single-system or the single-game emulator. Examples of these are an Atari 2600 emulator, NES emulator, and an Apple II emulator. These classic video game emulators can only emulate one kind of game or system. The second type of emulators is the multi-emulators.

The best example of this is the Multi-Arcade Machine Emulator or the MAME. MAME can emulate hundreds of arcade games, although not all arcade games can run on the same kind of system. That is a huge generalization, but the reason multi-emulators require more resources compared to single system emulators, in most cases.

The start of emulation has opened a lot of opportunities for companies to take advantage of their resources. Why spend a lot of time reprogramming or porting the classic arcade games to a new console when you can easily write an upright emulator. Emulation is the solution to these problems, and gives the gamers an exact replica of the classic games they love and want to acquire.

Now that you have read about classic video game emulators feel free to comment or send me a message if you would like to know my recommendations on some classic video game emulators.

Working on skills will not only help you improve your success while playing online games but will also give you higher self-esteem and a sense of achievement. And remember that the faster you master the easy games, you can turn to the more complicated ones and match your brain and skills against the real experts.

How to Improve Your Online Gaming Skills?

Online playing is different than just playing on your personal computer at home. While online, you have to pay attention to many different things that need to be taken into account, and I will detail these here:

1) Internet Connection: Pay attention to your online connection and make sure that the internet connection is strong and without any connection breaks. These can be done easily by trying to play a simple online game before moving on to the more serious ones. For example, play scrabbles or checkers online and then see how your connection works.

2) The Graphics: Check that your PC screen is strong enough to run the specific game you have in mind. Download the trial and play it on your computer. If you can’t run or if it does not run smoothly, be aware that though the online version is less of a strain on the resources of your computer, the game might get stuck or stall from time to time. What can you do? Other than spending money on improving the hardware of your computer, the only thing you can do is to pick another game.

3) Limit your game time: One of the most important facts that young players tend to overlook is that they cannot play forever. The body needs sleep and even though it might appear or one might not feel tired, your performance drops as the hours pass by. It is important also to (if the game permits it) try and drink water while playing and not Coca Cola or Pepsi or anything else sweet or alcoholic. These will only make you more sleepy than before even if for the first few minutes it will feel as if they are invigorating you.

4) Game Plans: Have a look at how others are playing before you join the fray. Study the manner how the game moves and how others hide or move. Even if you end up playing against other players, eventually the nooks and corners of the game are similar. Remember that people tend to move in similar fashion so the whole point is to get a whiff of game movement.

5) Strategy: Look up different strategic models and systems offered and posted on the internet. Your players might use some of these and if you are aware of them it will be easier for you to block their moves.

Now you should be well on your way to achieve online gaming skills mastery. If not you should at least have the online gaming skills to be a threat
