I was shocked when I saw in my news feed in Facebook an event titled, Retro Game Night. I was so looking forward to the event from the time that I saw it that I had to give it a try.
My Experience At The Retro Game Night: Missed The May Event
The May event happened to fall on the same day as the Toastmaster’s District Conference where I was the person who was in charge of the facilities aspect. Unfortunately, it required me to stay longer than I had expected and I missed the Retro Game Night in May. It really ate at me for a bit because I was soooo looking forward to the event. I tried to rationalize and reason with myself that I would not have fun if I had gone to the event.
No matter how much I tried to tell myself about how I would not have fun, the more my body and psyche knew that I was lying. So I learned to deal with it.
My Experience At The Retro Game Night: Another Opportunity Came Into Existence
I looked on Facebook again and one day the event popped up again and it was like I heard the angels sing. Well you might not think it is that serious, but I am a Gamer (been one since I was 5 years old). I made sure that I was going to make this one and I had blocked any events so that I can make it. Even though I got there at midnight, I got a chance to go and experience the atmosphere.

My Experience At The Retro Game Night: Better Experience Than I Thought
The experience was better than expected because I not only got a chance to play all the retro games at the same time and then share it with other gamers.
The key thing that stood out to me was an addition to my vision of having a game room. I had an opportunity to see how it was logistically possible. There was even an Arcade cabinet in the place. The video helps me to have a visual and an plan to develop something similar for my house because I was able to determine the measurements needed for such a room.

I have told the story to help you all see that there are gold and gems in every opportunity. Even though I missed the first one, there was another event that came into existence. Similar to other successful people they may have missed the first opportunity but from their account they talk about how they sorta willed another into existence. I am not saying that I did that but there are times when events and circumstances seem to fall in your favor and it is best to take them.

McKee recently sat down with Greg ‘Da Spokesman’ Stargell, mastermind behind the on-going series Da Spokesman And The Awesomeness League to talk about his game-slash-comic. Read below for some interesting tidbits about the development process and bear witness to the beginnings of Friendly Fireside Interviews.
Friendly Fireside Chats: Hey Greg! Thanks for agreeing to do this interview! This is our first text interview for the site and I’m pretty excited to have you here, talking about your game. I see that it just got an IndieDB page on the first of the year, so…congratulations!
Greg ‘Da Spokesman’ Stargell: Yeah thanks. I was surprised when I got the email about it. It was a great accomplishment. Awesome and thanks it is an honor to be the first one.
FFC: Well, it’s an honor to be on this side of the metaphorical table, too. And I don’t doubt you feel accomplished, that’s no small feat. Before we get going to some more specific questions, let’s hear the pitch. What’s the idea behind your game, Da Spokesman And The Awesomeness League?
Da Spokesman: At first, I developed Da Spokesman to be like a character to combat the other superheroes for bragging rights. Then it changed when I had a conversation about the essence of trust and building a team and I used ‘Final Fantasy 8′ as a tool to help get the point across.
It was at the point I noticed I could help reach my generation and younger generations through video games.
I changed the purpose of Da Spokesman to be a person that people can relate to and gain ideas on how to overcome different obstacles in life. I decided to add other superheroes so that it would be easier to cover different things from different prospective.
So even though they are superheroes with powers they are still ordinary people inside that do extraordinary things.
FFC: The point, then, is that while Superman might be super strong, even if he wasn’t, he’d get the job done?
Da Spokesman: You can say that. The battles that Da Spokesman and The Awesomeness League have with the villains are there for entertainment but it is the internal battles they have that show the strength that we all need to get over different struggles.
FFC: I’m seeing that this is all very much based in comic book lore. Big fan of comics?
Da Spokesman: Yes I am, I am more biased towards Marvel because my favorite superheroes were Spider-Man and Iron Man. We had made a comic book issue before the completion of the first game.
FFC: You must have really enjoyed the recent years in cinema, then. What do you mean by that last comment?
Da Spokesman: We had made what we called the zeroth edition of Da Spokesman and The Awesomeness League. It has nothing to do with the storyline of the series but it was mainly like an introduction to the characters that would start the series.
FFC: Oh, that’s neat! I didn’t know about that. So, was the original idea, then, to be a comic book? And then FF8 changed your mind? Or FF8 is what changed the protagonist from ‘show off and best other superheroes’ to what it is today?
Da Spokesman: Final Fantasy 8 changed my vision of the character in the concept phase/story writing. That was before I found someone who could illustrate. While in the middle of the production of the comic, I had found someone who could code as well. So the video game was developed shortly after the comic was completed. So you can say, the experience with FF8 had sparked the change in the protagonist. Thank you Square Enix!
FFC: Was the goal always to have a video game after the comic? What made you choose to do both, as opposed to just one?
Da Spokesman: Yes, I thought it was easier to do the comic and less expensive to do a comic book than a video game. With things like GameMaker and Unity, it does not require you to break the piggy bank or be a rocket scientist to develop a game. Plus, when you have a team it makes it easier to do both.
FFC: It seems that there are a few people on your team, then? At least one more who codes and another artist. Anyone else? Any shout outs to give?

As a video game tester it is a position in which you truly would get paid for playing video games.
According to current game tester Doug D. from Electronic Arts, he say’s as a game tester you would “go over different components of a game and look for things that just don’t make sense.”You would also “break the game,” meaning you would “do things a normal user would do and accidentally see something go wrong.”
Doug Powell further adds that video game testing is a good place to start for young people who want to “break into the industry.”
To get such a position in it is best to have a “passion for gaming” and some educational background. Doug recommends a degree, or some form of higher-level education.

Animators are in charge for coordinating the movement of video game characters.

The Development of Da Spokesman And The Awesomeness League: The Inspiration
Well the best place to start is always at the beginning. When I had decided to start Da Spokesman and The Awesomeness League, it was for selfish motives at first.
In the beginning, it was suppose to be just Da Spokesman and my avenue to stay young and let my imagination just run wild. he was going to be a superhero that would combat other superheroes and utterly destroy them. His mannerisms actually derive from Peter Parker ( Spiderman especially when he was merged with the symbiote) and Tony Starks (Ironman).
He would defeat the other heroes and taunt the whole time while doing it.
The Development of Da Spokesman And The Awesomeness League: The Shift, My Why Changed
After speaking and interacting with people, I noticed that most people do not know that there is true potential inside of them. It was at that point, I realized I have an avenue to at least share with them a message of inspiration.
I have spoken with a select number of my friends that I have met throughout the years and asked them if they would be willing to be characters in my story. Some chose the good and others chose the bad.

This was an interesting, fun, and hard part because up till this point I did not really have anything to show to make it real. I was able to find an illustrator by the name of Paulo Hernandez to help to the first step in making this project real.
He was tasked to design each character as well as design the zeroth edition of the comic book. The comic book he developed was mainly for the audience to get acquainted with the initial characters. It turned out pretty well and at the time of this writing we have 20 main characters that are good or bad.
The Development of Da Spokesman And The Awesomeness League: Phase II – The Video Game
I am grateful that I was able to find someone to develop video games. I really was not expecting too much on the first one. It was to see if it was possible and to just do it. The first game was a simple design that was Da Spokesman in one of his forms where he could shot fireballs. Also the finish product was a .jar file which made it convenient to export.
Then I was able to find another video game developer that brought the game to another level. The name of the game is “Da Spokesman And The Awesomeness League – Minor League Edition” This time the game actually had a storyline where Toni Da Bookie with the aid of Boss Hawg and Temptress held Da Spokesman’s family hostage. The game embarks on the journey of Da Spokesman to save his mom and two sisters.

I have hired someone that is able to take the games that are developed and turn them into games that can be played on your smart phones and tablets. Looking forward to the release of our first mobile game. Excitement runs through as I write the words as you can tell.

I had a conversion with a co-worker that says video games are ruining our children and community. I thought as first as a gamer, that is just another person looking to put blame to something but then I thought it would be good to open to debate.
There are several age-appropriate video games that provide hours of fun while at the same time providing practice in logic and strategizing as well as problem solving. However the growth and rising popularity of video games has been riddled with controversy as younger and younger children get exposed to the subset of video games that feature antisocial behavior, violence and gore.
There is rising concern on the effects of violent video games on children. The increasingly realistic nature of these games makes them extremely popular among children of all ages, but it is this very same realistic nature that is the cause of great anxiety.

Social scientists hypothesize that there are four main reasons why video games have such a profound impact on children.

As opposed to passive observation; the active participation that is required in violent video games fosters aggression as second nature.
The repetitive nature of the interaction, which provides ample opportunity for learning violent ways of thinking and acting. Violent games are in effect a rehearsal for violent behavior and actions in real life.
Exposure to violent video games increases aggressive thoughts and emotions as well as aggressive actions.
So I open the floor to what you think because I kind of disagree because I know people who play violent video games (I being one of them) and was not affected by the games. Who knows maybe people would have the video games do the dreaded Disclaimers during the game like they did to cartoons in the 90s.

The Official Da Spokesman And The Awesomeness League Update – Progress Has Been Made
Happy Cinco De Mayo everyone
A lot of work has been put into the development of Da Spokesman and the Awesomeness League since I have last posted.
Not only did we get a comic book edition developed for Da Spokesman and The Awesomeness League but we also have video games that were developed and actually a third one is in the process of being made as we speak.
So this post I will address those updates as well as talk about what are some future things in the works as regards to the future development of Project Da Spokesman and The Awesomeness League.
The Official Da Spokesman And The Awesomeness League Update: The Comic Book
With alot of hard work and effort the zeroth edition of the comic book was developed. The premise of this edition was to help people get acquainted with the beginning characters because I was still unsure of the storyline or the origin of Da Spokesman.
The Official Da Spokesman And The Awesomeness League Update: The Power Of One?
The zeroth edition is called Da Spokesman: The Power Of One.
During That time frame people jump on board to become characters for the comic book because one of the things that people advised me on was to get noticed in the comic book realm you should have at least 20 main characters good/bad. So far there are about that many now but there are more characters in the works as the series progress.
The Progression of the series will be in four parts: Minor League, Major League, International League, and Galactic League. I will save the details about each part and what distinguishes the difference between them for another post.

The Official Da Spokesman And The Awesomeness League Update: The Video Games
As stated in the previous section, the video games will fall inline with the progression of the story in the four parts. Two games were made so far. Where one is a simple design for mobile apps so that it can be enjoyable for all.
The second game actually require some thought into getting to the end of the game.
This would be great for people who would like somewhat of a challenge and not to mention the possible replay value because people would want to try to see how things would work with different combination of abilities.
Again I will not spoil the surprise of the abilities, you would have to play the game to find out more.
On a future post, I will explain the storyline of the game and give an opportunity to acquire both video games.

Currently, we are awaiting the completion of the third game as well as interviewing people for mobile app/game development and motion animation.

Yes we are looking to animate the characters and probably make it into a show via TV or online. All I know is that you would want to stay tuned to get the updates.
I am currently interviewing the animators to see which one would be best for the job.

I am actually looking for a person who has mobile game development skills. So that I would be able to translate the games to Android, IOS, etc. and would be accessible on mobile devices.

Exploring The History Of The Awesomeness Of Video Games: The Rise of the New
In 1984, everything changed. The reason? Two innovations: The reduction in cost of Dynamic RAM (DRAM) chips which allowed more memory, and the production of higher power 8-bit processors, which lowered the prices of the previous chips.
Sega, a new player in home gaming systems, entered the console market with their Master System 2. The Sega Master system would sell very well, but its success would be limited.
The other key player was Nintendo of Japan. The genius of Nintendo was their marketing prowess, as they poured millions into advertisements. These advertisements hit consumers at the perfect time, as evidenced in their sales.
In fact, Nintendo couldn’t manufacture enough systems to keep up with demand. After all was said and done, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) would become the highest selling system in history.
They would also become the most notorious, as they were involved in the intimidation of retailers, competing companies, and other suppliers and partners.
Over the next five years Sega and Nintendo would battle for dominance, going back and forth. The consumer definitely benefited from this rivalry.
The next era, it was between PlayStation 2, the Xbox and the GameCube. Xbox has taken the step to merge the past and present, where Xbox “Live Arcade” is a console system that has a “download-like” characteristic where you can buy games via the console itself.
One thing in the video game industry will always remain: the classic games of yesterday were great games, helped define an era, and will always be fun.
Exploring The History Of The Awesomeness Of Video Games: Exploring The Awesomeness Of The Present
With the transitions of two generations for example PS3 –> PS4, there are much promise for the future however it is only a matter of time before we can see the next generation reach its full potential.
As I write this post, the PS3 and Xbox 360 have not been utilized to its full capacity.
Another thing is that the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii had some form of downward compatibility and the next generation do not which put it in a state where it is competing against itself.
It is one of the few times in history where people would prefer to stay with the current system than to actually upgrade to the next system.
Now all we can do is sit back and watch how the game systems will address these downfalls in the future. I am confident it will work itself out and gaming will roar on and on into the future.
