Why Having Dance Lessons Are Good For You And To You: It is Good For The Heart

Keeping our hearts healthy is important.  Cardiovascular exercises, which increase heart rate, keep our hearts in shape.  Regular exercise has also been shown to lower blood pressure, freeing our heart from some of the effort in moving blood through our system.

But many people don’t get much enjoyment from disciplined workouts.  They know they need regular cardiovascular exercise to stay heart-healthy, but what activities are there to steer clear of tedious typical exercise programs?

Why Having Dance Lessons Are Good For You And To YouWhy Having Dance Lessons Are Good For You And To You: Have You Tried Dancing

Many find dancing to be one such activity.  Dancing allows you to get your heart pumping and your limbs moving without having to endure the monotony of exercising on a treadmill or at a gym. Dancing regularly keeping not only keeps ones heart healthy, it also helps maintain balance and coordination. Plus, of course, dance lessons and events let you get you out of the house regularly and make and meet friends.

Local organizations, universities, community and, sometimes, churches hold dancing lessons and events that are open to people of all abilities and skill levels.  If you haven’t danced in awhile, or even if you’ve never tried it before, it’s never too late to learn.

Adding another skill to your list never hurts, and dancing is an ability that comes in handy mighty often.  Dance lessons are typically offered by style (ballroom, folk, Latin, swing, et cetera) and ability level (beginner, intermediate, advanced, competitive).

Why Having Dance Lessons Are Good For You And To You: Types Of Dances To Consider

Ballroom dancing is performed with a partner (don’t worry; there are typically a number of “singles” taking lessons.  You’ll be able to pair off when you go to the lesson).  Everything from the internationally renowned waltz, to the classic American Foxtrot, to the Tango and cha-cha, fall into the category of ballroom dance.

Folk dancing typically refers to square dancing, contra dancing, or one of several Irish, Scottish, or English styles of dance.  Folk dances can sometimes be more social than ballroom dances (since partners typically split up and join with others during the course of the dance).

Latin Dancing is my dance of preference. It is similar to ballroom in that it is usually a partnered dance and there a good amount of singles that take the course as well. I know a good amount of people that met their significant other through the dance ( I am one of them). Some of the Latin Dances are Merengue, Bachata, Salsa, and Cumbia just to name a few. Other popular styles of dance include swing, Latin, traditional and many others.  Feel free to explore. Who knows you might find you significant other on the dance floor.

Books and videos can also be found online, if you just need a refresher, or would rather get the basics in the comfort of your own home, but only would not take the place of an actual class.

My recommendation is to find a dance type you would like to try and ask around or you can contact me if you need help. If you are in the Huntsville, AL area, you are in luck there are some great instructors especially in the Latin Dancing arena that can help you get started to have fun and lower your cholesterol.

If you’re looking for a great way to be heart-smart, stays fit, and meet new people, try dancing.  Dance lessons allow us to try something new, exercise, and take part in a social activity all at the same time.  Find a style that interests you, pick the appropriate skill level, find a place, and dance!

Check Out How Dancing Could Have Some Healing Effects On You: Can Dancing Heal?

Dance give us plenty of room for self-expression and can be powerful in helping the body and mind to be stimulated. It’s all about movement and music and you.

This is one thing everyone agrees about: Dance is beneficial. It’s exercising without “feeling” like you’re exercising, it increases cardiovascular and mental health, releasing endorphins while you turn, spin, and simply MOVE.

Unfortunately, in our “modernized” society, we have lost touch with its potential. In contrast, dance has always been an integral part of many other cultures. You don’t have to dance with an African tribe around a roaring fire to realize the healing benefits of dance; luckily, all you need is yourself.

The other great thing about dance is that it can be done either in the privacy of your own home, in dance classes as a recreational outlet, at a party with friends, or as you do any number of household tasks, fitting a little “swing” in your steps.

“Oh, I can’t dance,” you’ll say. Can’t, or won’t? Dancing is simply moving, like wayward walking. It doesn’t have to be funky-crazy or hip; you don’t have to go with a style you don’t feel comfortable with; and those of you with “dance inhibition” are free, nearly every day, to find time and a private place large enough to move around freely — again, also known as dancing.

Choose music you feel comfortable with. Music preferences naturally vary from person to person — and even from day to day — so it just doesn’t matter of you decide to dance to Prince, Mozart, Garth Brooks, or Billie Holiday. That’s the first rule: Never put any kind of restrictions on yourself, thinking, “I like that music, but how do you dance to “Jingle Bells”?

When you are ready to begin, stand for a moment with your eyes closed. Feel the connection of your feet to the floor and just relax. If you feel completely at a loss for what to do, imagine your breath supplying your entire body with a golden fluid, making your body light and flexible.

Allow this to transition into any movements you wish, moving as the body dictates. Flow, float, stomp, jump up and down. Move fast or in slow motion. The key is to just allow the body to move, so don’t think too much — just move. Don’t worry about how you look; if you’re alone, no one can see you. If you’re in a dance class, everyone else is laughing, making the same mistakes you are.

When you really get into it, after a while you’ll definitely notice something: You’re not worrying as much any more; you are sleeping better; you aren’t as irritable at work or at home, with your family; and you feel surprisingly “healed” in some way.

In fact, the natural bodily healing and restoration can last from a couple of minutes to a several hours. People young and old, in all states of fitness, living in all kinds of bodies can benefit from dance. Those with injuries or physical challenges can benefit as well as any “able-bodied” person; just listen to your body and work with its limitations. Dance can be used for healing major stresses as well as “everyday life,” for it is often that these stresses build up, manifesting in extreme tension, anger, and even illness.

Remember, you’re not forcing your body to move according to someone other person’s steps; to truly dance is to just tune in to your own personal radio station, and move according to the rhythm of your soul. Dance slow, dance fast, dance solo, dance with others, dance with joy, even dance the sorrow out of your heart. There are no rules — just DANCE!

How Salsa Dancing  Can Help You Lose Those Extra Calories: Aerobic and Anaerobic Training

Let me explain the difference between the two…

How Salsa Dancing  Can Help You Lose Those Extra Calories: Aerobic

Specifically refers to the use of the same large muscle group, rhythmically, for a period of 15 to 20 minutes or longer while maintaining 60-80% of your maximum heart rate. Basically it’s doing an activity for a long period of time at low intensity. Activities using aerobic exercise include jogging, swimming, walking, biking and cross-country skiing.

How Salsa Dancing  Can Help You Lose Those Extra Calories: Anaerobic

Anaerobic activity refers to activities that are short in duration and high in intensity. Some anaerobic activities include: weight lifting, sprinting, racquetball, downhill skiing, softball, soccer and football. Its high intensity and works the muscles quickly and rigorously.
Aerobic refers to air or oxygen. To easily remember the difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise just think that since aerobic is air or oxygen, that these types of activities should allow you to speak while performing the activity without gasping for air.

If you are gasping for air during your activity you are most likely working anaerobically – which means faster, harder and at a higher intensity.
The continual movement of the salsa dance style steadily burns calories but also tones the body – most specifically the legs. But not only does it tone the body but it also adds strength to muscles without the high impact of most other exercises like weight training or running.

How Salsa Dancing  Can Help You Lose Those Extra Calories: Salsa Is A Good Choice

Salsa is also an excellent exercise choice because it combines individual dance routines that can also be paired up with a partner.

Actually, salsa dancing can be practiced alone and then adding a partner for added excitement. The social charm that partnered salsa dancing has is very appealing.

How Salsa Dancing  Can Help You Lose Those Extra Calories: A Night Of Dancing

A night of dancing is an excellent workout. If you are just learning to salsa dance you most likely will be working anaerobically.

But as you advance to quicker salsa movements that are more complex like the professional salsa dancers twirling through the air with jumps and intense spins requiring strength, you will most likely be working your body anaerobically. This means that your muscles are working at a high intensity level.

In general, salsa dancing is an excellent workout. You’ll get fit, more toned and look better but also have fun while you’re doing it! Start joining the salsa craze now and use the information on How Salsa Dancing  Can Help You Lose Those Extra Calories.
